All Indian nationals who wish to study in the Federal Republic of Germany require a visa prior to their departure.

An application may only be filed at the German Embassy New Delhi under the provision that the applicant.

Has permanent residence in the area of jurisdiction of the Embassy which includes the states of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Union Territories Chandigarh, Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Minicoy and Amini.

Personal appearance at the German Embassy is mandatory for all applicants.

All applicants have to schedule an appointment for personal interview at the German Embassy.

Admission to the Visa Section of the German Embassy will only be granted at the time of the scheduled appointment. Being late will consequently result in scheduling a new appointment.

The visa application must be supported by all the necessary documents as only Applications with complete documentation can be accepted.

In case the visa application and the supporting documents are in accordance with the requirements for a Student Visa your application will be forwarded to the competent Aliens' Office in Germany (Ausländerbehörde) for the mandatory Approval.

It is important to apply in time as the visa process might take between eight and twelve weeks. Simultaneous applications for a Schengen visa and a Student Visa cannot be entertained.

Furthermore, the Embassy has to point out that visa for business; tourist or visiting purposes cannot be changed into residence permits after arrival in Germany. Upon application for a Student Visa at the German Embassy the following documents have to be submitted in the original version along with an attested. Translation into the English language and two identical and arranged sets of copiesof each document (copies have to be provided in DIN-A4 size only):

  • Two Visa Application Forms (please make sure that both forms are duly filled out and signed indicating especially the address of your future residence in Germany – (question 15) as well as your complete address including telephone No. and E-Mail-address in India)
  • Three passport size photos
  • Visa fee Which is 60 Euros has to be paid through Demand Draft made out to the “Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany” in New Delhi The German Missions accept Demand Drafts from all nationalized banks.

  • Valid passport with a validity of at least 12 months along with two Copies of all printed pages. Please note that Indian passports can only be accepted if their bio data (name, date of birth, place of birth of Holder, sex) have not been modified by an "observation". However, Observations regarding the validity of the passport are permitted.
  • Cover letter from applicant, explaining the exact purpose and duration of your stay in Germany.
  • Letter of admission from the German University
  • Proof that study fees have been paid, if applicable. In case the fees are not paid or due yet, proof has to be provided that the necessary amount will be at the applicant's disposal in due course of time.
  • School Leaving Certificate of Secondary School
  • University Certificates (Degree Certificates and Mark Sheets)
  • Proof of Language Proficiency (TOEFL / IELTS, original and A 4 sized copy). Exemptions do apply in case of a written confirmation from the University that this requirement may be waived, for applicants for Ph.D / Doctorate studies and Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Holders.
  • Proof of financial means to cover the costs for the time of your studies by one of the following documents:
  • Confirmation of Scholarship / Stipend
  • Formal sponsorship letter from a sponsor living in Germany (“Verpflichtungserklärung” according to Article 68 German Residence Act)

Blocked account (“Sperrkonto”) in Germany in the name of the applicant showing a minimum balance of Euro 7905,- and theremark that the account holder

For information with regard to the procedure of opening a blocked account in Germany please contact a bank in Germany or an international bank of your choice.

It is highly recommended that the money transfer is made by international bank transfer. Do not send bank drafts, moneyorders or cheques to open the blockedaccount.

Confirmation of an annually renewable bank guarantee from a bank in Germany in the amount of Euro 7905

From the moment of entering the Federal Republic of Germany you are upon request required to provide proof of a valid Health Insurance. This may be done through a regular Travel Health Insurance bought in India.

However, as soon as you formally register and enroll with the German University / begin your studies a regular Travel Health Insurance loses its validity

You are required to get a valid Health insurance from a German Insurance provider

Please note that in case of incomplete documents the application will not be taken in and processed by the Embassy. Consequently a new appointment has to be scheduled!
